Joe, aged seven, has some difficulties accessing class work, and the school is in the process of applying for an education, health and care plan (EHCP). He has regular support from the class TA, and has teacher support in nearly every lesson. The impact of this support isn’t enough considering the time that has been invested. During a science lesson, Joe was asked to record items around the classroom using a pre-prepared grid, and to describe their magnetic properties in the space provided. Joe sat for a while, thinking about what had been asked of him. After a pause, he asked the teacher, ‘When’s my help going to start?’ He was so used to the scaffolding that it didn’t occur to him that he could complete a task on his own. He literally sat there waiting for support. As it turns out, deliberately taking this away freed him to try it alone, and while he felt uneasy, he managed to complete the task. In hindsight, Joe had been given too much scaffolding in the hope that he would create work that was at the same level as his peers’. What was needed was for Joe to forge his own experiences – sometimes with support, but almost more importantly, sometimes without. It was during those independent episodes that he grew more. The EHCP, when it finally came to fruition, vindicated this type of support. It also decreed the provision of ‘uncomfortable’ tasks that Joe should experience to build his independence and resilience.
